Poetry 365: Lullaby

Two hours and twenty six minutes
of sleep.
Waking: it comes on
like a disease.

The floorboards are dreaming,
softly breathing and sighing.
Dim lamplight shadows
pollute the white/blue bedclothes.

Count. Count. Count. Sheep. Sheep. Sheep.
Leaping over split rail fences.
Count. Count. Count.
I must conduct this census.

Count. Count. Count.
Sleep. Sleep. Sleep.
